Selection timeline
- Eligibility Check
Prospective members must meet minimum requirements including a GPA of at least 2.5, full-time enrollment, high ethical standards, and submission of Undergraduate Membership Interest Application and Legacy Application if applicable. Chapters review documents like transcripts and community service evidence; those not meeting criteria receive a Letter of Regret. This initial screening typically occurs before Rush and takes 1-2 weeks.
- Official Rush/Interest Meetings
Attendance at the official Rush event, posted at least two weeks in advance, is mandatory to be eligible for consideration; missing it disqualifies candidates. These meetings provide insights into AKA's mission, values, and activities, allowing interaction with members. Events last 1-2 hours per session over one or more days.
- Application Submission and Chapter Voting
Qualified candidates submit full application packets which are reviewed by the chapter; active members vote by secret ballot on prospects (legacies exempt from vote). Favorable votes require majority per Manual of Standard Procedure guidelines, with electronic notices and ballot distribution. Process spans 1-2 weeks post-Rush.
- Background Check and Letter of Acceptance
Candidates with favorable votes receive a Background Check letter and link; completion is required before proceeding. Membership Chairman and Graduate Advisor issue Letter of Acceptance to approved candidates, authorizing start of Membership Experience (ME). This step takes 3-7 days after voting.
- New Member Education Program (MIP)
Selected candidates participate in 8 days of Membership Intake Program (MIP) sessions focused on AKA history, values, and preparation for active participation. Conducted under Graduate Advisor supervision with no hazing allowed; includes educational activities only. Sessions are daily over 8 consecutive days.
- Initiation Ceremony
Final stage where new members are officially initiated as Sorors in a ceremonial event; candidates provide guest Soror names for invitations with specified attire. Marks full membership after completing ME; ceremony lasts 1-2 hours.
